For glaciers and ice fields you can explore the fjords along Chile’s coastline, or a cruise to the Galapagos Islands offers the chance to see the world as nature intended it.

But it’s the Amazon River that really appeals to the inner adventurer, with its magnificently fading colonial cities thousands of miles from civilisation and a kaleidoscope of exotic birds. Go in search of alligators at night in motorised canoes, or try piranha fishing, jungle trekking and survival training.

Princess Cruises’ 14-day Amazon River cruise, from £2,180pp (without return flights), on Pacific Princess departs 23 December. 0845 075 0031; princess.com

Top Tip:

Take Arctic kit for Chile’s ice fields but the Amazon will be hot and humid. Pack insect repellent with DEET, sturdy footwear, anti-malarial tablets (where needed), anti-histamines, anti-diarrhea tablets, and re-hydration powder may be useful – and could win you lots of friends.
