Amsterdam in The Netherlands has numerous examples of 16th and 17th century architecture, as well as two historic churches: the Oude Kerk (Old Church), built about 1300, and the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), built in the 15th century. The royal palace, originally built in the 17th century as the town hall, stands on a large square in the centre of the city. Above all, it’s a vibrant city of today, its seemingly inexhaustible energy by day and night fuelled by over 1,500 bars and cafés.
Your second port of call Cologne, Germany, was one of the most important settlements in the entire Roman empire and it still has the remains of Roman buildings, like parts of the square town walls, underground canal drains and a 50-mile long aqueduct that brought water to the town from the Eifel mountains. Many of the remains are displayed in the Roemisches Germanisches Museum.
