Earlier this year TV presenter Phillip Schofield embarked on his first cruise sailing from Barcelona on Princess Cruises‘ Royal Princess. Here he reveals what made the experience so special. By Liz Jarvis
“Arriving by the side of Royal Princess in Barcelona was fantastic. We were thinking “This is smart,” it was spectacular, and when we saw our stateroom we felt very lucky. We loved the whole experience of cruising, waking up to a different view every day, watching the world go by, everything taken care of – it’s so relaxing. I like to be very active on holiday and there was masses to do, loads of entertainment all in one place, I was very impressed.
“And then when it came to the actual destinations such as Barcelona I felt like an explorer, because we did things you wouldn’t have expected – like learning to cook with a chef in a restaurant on Las Ramblas.
“It’s no secret that I love a gadget and the bridge was fabulous, it was like being on the Starship Enterprise… but of course now it’s all done by computer so I was a bit disappointed with the size of the wheel… it was like the Dennis Wise from I’m A Celebrity size of wheel.
“I was attracted to Princess Cruises because my wife Steph and I both love food and wine.
“Next year we’ll be sailing to another part of the world… I can’t say too much but it will be a Northern European destination. We can’t wait to experience the ocean medallion experience. I think it will be a huge prime part of booking a cruise.
“One of our favourite experiences on our cruise was the blending experience, it was beautifully done. Steph likes her wine much softer and you learn quite a bit about the wines on board, including the super Tuscans. It was sensational. I think one of the great things about the cruising experience is that it makes wine more accessible.”
