Q. I am really interested in the idea of taking a cruise with a line that offers an opportunity to interact with local people. Can you tell me whether there are any that do so?

A. The great thing about cruising is that it does offer the chance to embrace different cultures. River cruise lines, for example Viking and AMA Waterways, have been offering the opportunity to meet local people on their cruises in countries such as Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Russia for a while, and there’s also the chance to visit and support local community projects. If you feel you’d like to get even more involved, new cruise line Fathom is all about travelling ‘deep’, and doing something practical to help make an impact.
