Valencia, Spain

At the moment only small ships can dock in Valencia, but there is talk of building a new cruise terminal, so now could be the time to visit this historic but innovative city before it gets too crowded. As Spain’s third largest city it has an atmospheric old quarter but also some superb modern architecture in the City of Arts and Sciences district, built on a former river bed that is now a park winding through the city. The Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe here looks like the sun-bleached bones of a whale but is in fact one of the world’s best science museums.
Saga Cruises has an 18-night Wonders of the Mediterranean cruise on Saga Sapphire on 1 July in a round trip from Dover calling at Valencia and ports including Palma in Majorca and Leixões in Portugal from £3,322pp, based on two people sharing, including UK mainland travel service to and from Southampton. Visit saga.co.uk/cruises or call 0800 505030.
