Koningsdam cruise ship review

Holland America Line’s latest ship Koningsdam, the first in their new Pinnacle Class, is glamorous, sophisticated and elegant, says Cruise International Editor Liz Jarvis

If you want to cruise on a ship that has the look and feel of a glamorous luxury New York hotel, then Koningsdam is for you. Named by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, it’s quite simply one of the most beautiful vessels at sea.

The ship’s music theme starts in the atrium, which was inspired by the curves of an instrument, and continues with exquisite artwork and sculptures throughout.

Staterooms are understated and chic, with accents of lilac, persimmon and pistachio, extremely comfortable beds, clever touches such as bedside USB ports, and spacious bathrooms; the new family and solo staterooms are also guaranteed to be a big hit.

There are two good-sized swimming pools, and a double-deck glass-roofed Lido Deck with contemporary accents, an ideal space for relaxing during the day or partying at night.

In addition to the excellent Asian restaurant Tamarind, dining venues include the Pacific Northwest-themed Pinnacle Grill, seafood brasserie Sel de Mer, and Italian restaurant Canaletto. The main dining room is bright and spacious, the Dutch Café, inspired by blue and white Delftware, warm and cosy, and the Lido Market is ideal for breakfast or a quick bite.

There is also the acclaimed Culinary Arts Center, Notes whisky bar, and the Crow’s Nest, with its contemporary design and fantastic views; Music Walk has three stages showcasing live music from the US.

The Greenhouse Spa is a haven at sea, with heated loungers, a huge whirlpool and big beauty salon. This is a ship that is dedicated to enjoying the very best that life has to offer in a relaxed but serene setting. Koningsdam is definitely in a class of its own.

GETTING THERE: A seven-night Norse Legend cruise, departing 10 July 2016, starts from £719pp, based on two sharing an inside stateroom, excluding flights (hollandamerica.co.uk).
