Following her naming in Naples just last month, the popular cruise line MSC’s largest ship to date, Fantasia, is currently discovering the treasures of Spain, Gibraltar, Madeira and the Canary Islands. Cruising year round in the Med (from the Italian ports of Genoa and Civitavecchia until 11 March 2009), Fantasia is packed with features designed to herald a new era for cruising – most notably its 4,300 square metre VIP area (MSC Yacht Club) complete with a 24-hour butler service and a Swarovski crystal floor.
Yacht Club aside, of the 1,637 cabins, 80 percent have sea views. There are numerous restaurant and bar choices – you’ll find all types of regional Italian cuisine, as well as gourmet French and Tex-Mex in the six main restaurants, a selection of swimming pools (the main pool has a retractable sun roof so the ship is suited to winter cruising in Europe), the MSC Aurea Spa, an outdoor cinema and even a dazzling candy shop for those with a sweet tooth.
As we’ve come to expect from the MSC fleet, the ship is packed with stylish Italian touches: swathes of beautiful marble, polished wood, dramatic glass staircases and tasteful soft furnishings. If you like big ship cruising with an international passenger-mix and Italian flair, you’ll love MSC Fantasia.
MSC Aurea Spa
An authentic Balinese wellness centre offering innovative treatments executed under strict medical supervision. Located on deck 14 and overlooking the sea, it occupies 1,700 square metres subdivided into specific areas including the thalassotherapy room with three cabins offering treatments based on seawater; thermal area with four saunas and two Turkish baths; a 415 square metre gymnasium; a yoga room; and a relaxation area with comfortable loungers and a huge window from which to enjoy the view. The spa’s speciality treatment is the Balinese massage where guests can choose from a variety of massage techniques and perfumed oils for the ultimate in relaxation and pampering.
MSC Yacht Club
Developed for a really luxurious cruising experience, this VIP area has 99 spacious suites with a professional 24-hour butler service; a pool and solarium; a panoramic lounge; private access to the MSC Aurea Spa; hydro-massage pools; panoramic foredecks; private lifts; and a reception with concierge service. Located in the most prestigious part of the ship, on Deck 15 forward, the Yacht Club takes advantage of the stunning views. Following priority check in, guests are welcomed with champagne and canapés.
MSC Yacht Club Suites
Measuring from 22.10 square metres to 52.80 square metres, these 99 suites have double beds which can be converted into two singles, air conditioning, ample wardrobes, bathroom with bathtub, interactive television, radio, telephone, internet connection, a mini bar and a safe. All feature Samsung LCD screens and some also provide a Bose system and Nintendo Wii station. On arrival guests are escorted to their suite by their personal butler who will offer to unpack their suitcases.
Piazza San Giorgio
A true replica of a pretty Italian square, located on deck six, with places to eat and drink, and shops stocked with perfume, jewellery, fashion, accessories, wines, liquors and cigars. You’ll find brands such as Bulgari, Swarovski, Gucci and D&G here.
Formula 1 Simulator
A state of the art simulator that allows you to experience the adrenaline rush of travelling at high speed by perfectly reproducing the driving conditions of one of the fastest cars in the world.
Teamed with special headphones, this giant screen offers an audio/visual experience like never before.
Completely off limits to adults, I Graffiti is a place where teenagers can party to their hearts’ content.
This swimming pool has more than 150 fountains, sprays and water features and is illuminated by night with the magic of a thousand colours and all to the rhythm of music.
Environmentally friendly systems:
Lighting will switch off in empty cabins and public areas, and there are individual climate control systems that cut out when balcony doors are opened, achieving electricity savings of more than 20 percent over a ‘normal’ ship of a similar size.
Who goes? A mix of Italians, other Europeans and a significant number of Americans. Expect a younger age group than on many other ships – MSC Fantasia is superb for families.
