Home of the famous Port wine and Portugal’s second largest city, Porto is situated on the banks of the Douro River and lies in the Costa Verde, a region steeped in history and ancient monuments with wide golden beaches and sprawling pine forests.
Main attractions include its 12th century cathedral, the art museum containing some of Portugal’s finest masterpieces, St. Francis Church, its interior entirely covered in 18th century gilded carvings, and the Stock Exchange with its impressive Moorish hall. Try a visit inland to the heart of the Costa Verde with visits to historic Braga and the shrine of Bom Jesus and also to Guimeres, the ancient capital and birthplace of the first king of Portugal.
Another highlight is Entre-os-Rios, which is located between two rivers, the river Paiva and the Douro, as its name implies. The vineyards covering the slopes of the Douro valley offer spectacular scenery and are famous for the production of the world famous port wine. The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to Termas de Entre-os-Rios Spa.
