3. Classic canal cruise
Juno, a steamship launched in 1874, is the world’s oldest registered ship with overnight accommodation. It travels Sweden coast-to-coast along the 120-mile, 58-lock Göta Canal between Stockholm and Gothenburg in nostalgic luxury, a wealth of brass and wood, with 29 cabins (a bit like those on luxury trains), a covered deck for gazing at the lakes, forests and the string of seven locks stepping down a hillside in Berg, a lounge and a dining room with an elegant, historic feel.
A four-day Classic Canal cruise, with dates in June and August, starts at around £1,200pp, full board, without flights (+46 031 80 63 15; stromma.se/en/gota-canal).
