|Why don’t cruise companies cater more for singles? We don’t eat twice the food, we don’t use twice the laundry and the cabin is quicker to clean. Yet we are charged twice the price.
Surely it’s more economical to have one person in a cabin than it being empty. The old argument is two people spend more but I’ve known couples who don’t spend anything and singles who spend lots?
|Thanks for your question and believe me it has been a bone of contention for
many years. Travel Agents like myself are also very frustrated and we do pass this feedback across to the Cruise lines. You are absolutely right in what you say about not eating so much food etc.The fact is that many more people do travel not only in pairs but also as families. If a Cruise line can fill a cabin to its maximum occupancy then that is always going to be more of a money earner for them. Not only in terms of the initial price paid but also it means more money is spent on board on drinks, excursions and so on. Also the tips will be greater from a fully occupied cabin.Cruise lines are money making businesses and you will see this kind of thing echoed with land based holidays and even UK BB Hotels. It is not unique to the Cruise industry; the whole Travel Industry is the same when it comes to this issue.Single Travellers are penalised in a similar way to Families whose costs rise during school holidays. Also anyone wanting to travel over periods such as Christmas and New Year will also pay inflated prices. It’s a supply and demand situation and Cruise Lines argue that they do supply some voyages with lower single supplements. I do think however that the new ships coming onto the market are now providing more single cabins but I agree it’s far from ideal and just a start. There are some Cruise lines that are able to offer more single cabins than others.
