Ben Fogle is the new destination expert for Celebrity Cruises. We spoke to him about his favourite destinations in our quick-fire quiz
If you could be anywhere right now where would you be?
When I visited Positano on my first cruise with Celebrity Cruises I had to be dragged away kicking and screaming, so I would love to go back to the Amalfi coast – especially for their sunshine and good food.
What’s the biggest challenge that you’ve ever set yourself?
To swim across the Atlantic – I plan to do this within the next 10 years. There will be a boat alongside me, where I’ll sleep, but there will also be long periods of isolation while I swim – I’ve always enjoyed my own time and I think the ocean is conducive to that.
Would you say you have an affinity with extreme, and remote, climates?
I love places that are off the beaten track, there’s something very exciting about the word “remote”. Antarctica is one of the most magical places. My first visit was for the Amundsen Omega3 South Pole Race in 2009, but I was even more excited for my second visit – the filming of The Secrets of Scott’s Hut (BBC 2, 2011) – when I followed a team of conservationists who were there to restore and preserve Scott’s hut in the remote Cape Evans, Antarctica. It was amazing to get a small glimpse into the period of heroic exploration of 100 years ago, I would love to get back there and visit some more huts.
We all know you for your adventurous streak, do you ever take a relaxing beach holiday?
Of course, especially with family, I think there’s a misnomer that I only ever want big, hardcore adventures in jungles and extreme climates, but I do love a beach holiday.
Is there anywhere you’re craving to visit?
I have never been to the Faroe Islands. I’m intrigued by northern destinations, like Greenland – the idea of a remote island in the far north appeals to me. I’d be fascinated to see their way of life.
