Olympic gold medallist Sally Gunnell, OBE, reveals her perfect spots to unwind

for-web-Sally-Gunnell-on-Indy1Throughout my childhood I spent the summertime in Hemsby, Norfolk, where my aunt had a bungalow on the beach. I remember eating doughnuts, taking friends with me, enjoying endless sunshine and playing on the beach.

I was about 14 when I first travelled abroad. We went to the Canary Islands and the memory of the sand dunes at Las Palmas has stayed with me to this day.

When you’re training you get to travel the world, but it’s very fly-in, fly-out. The place I’ve gone back to many times since is Barcelona, where I won my Olympic gold medal. Last year I went with some girlfriends, saw the Gaudi architecture and had a ball. I love the fact that you can walk everywhere.

I’m ambassador for the Royal Caribbean Runners programme which, working with Sport England, offers people the chance to run with others on board – and when they return home.

All of the ships have running tracks and the most amazing gyms. I remember running on my treadmill at about 6.30 in the morning, watching us come into Naples – it was wonderful.

I have very vivid memories of Labadee and its warm sea. We went on a family Caribbean cruise on Oasis of the Seas, and Labadee is a favourite port of call. We love to keep active when we’re away and the beach there has zip wires and lots of outdoor activities. And then in Mexico we got the chance to go snorkelling.

I did some charity work with The Point Foundation in Rwanda about three years ago and spent time with children in an orphanage. I want to take our kids there – they’re old enough now to experience the real, rural and cultural side of Africa.
