Carnival’s big news for 2014 is its Carnival Live concert series, with renowned rock and country stars playing on board while in port. Almost 50 shows across the fleet include veteran rockers Foreigner and Chicago, country singer Martina McBride (who played at London’s O2 in March), Olivia Newton-John and Grammy Award-winner Jennifer Hudson. Concerts in the main show lounge take place in ports such as Cozumel in Mexico and Nassau in the Bahamas. It’s not free, though, with tickets $20 to $40. Carnival has also pepped up its house bands with both male and female lead singers, while there’s rock and pop in the Red Frog Pub and a lively piano bar.

Rock band REO Speedwagon are performing on the Los Angeles cruise, visiting Mexico. The six-night fly-cruise on 21 September 2014 starts at £1,189pp ( 374 2272).
