Cunard offer an intriguing mix of highbrow and imaginatively mainstream entertainment. You’ll find edited versions of classic plays by students of the Royal School of Dramatic Art, concerts by the National Symphony Orchestra, jazz in the intimate Illuminations lounge from students of the Juilliard School, and shows in the planetarium created by the Royal Astronomical Society. Queen Mary 2 has a 3D cinema while on Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth the three-tier Palm Court Theatres, which host musical revues and other shows, even have private boxes. Yet transatlantic crossings also play host to concerts and talks by leading musicians. Roger Daltrey of The Who has done it, Roger McGuinn – voice of the Byrds on albums such as Mr Tambourine Man – is a regular and will be travelling three times this year, while singer-songwriter James Taylor makes a return in August.

Roger McGuinn will perform on Queen Mary 2 sailing from Southampton to New York on 12 November 2014. Prices start at £1,299pp ( 374 2224).
