Get the bug

Ok, so it’s not the most glamorous way to start a style blog, but I hope you’ll forgive a practical post on one of the annoyances of travel.
I was lucky enough to be invited on a wonderful cruise round the Adriatic last week on board Hapag Lloyd’s Europa. You’ll be able to read about my travels on this fabulous ship in a future issue of the magazine but suffice to say it was one of the smoothest and most elegant cruise experiences it is possible to have.
I took my mother with me on the trip, and the only thing that was far from elegant was how bitten we both were by mosquitoes. They simply loved us. To them, we were as tasty a morsel as the Michelin-star offerings from the on-board Dieter Muller restaurant.
So, I am now making it my mission to track down the best insect repellents on the market, and the top treatments available if you do get bitten.
One I’m trying is aloe vera gel, which can sooth the itching, redness, swelling and pain that follows an insect bite or sting. Ultimate Aloe Skin Gel from Higher Nature is a high potency gel that may help with all sorts of ailments, from dry skin to sunburn. I’m finding that’s it’s definitely cooling and soothing, with a natural smell, and I’m applying it to the skin as the bites heal in the hope it will reduce any scarring.
Tweet us at @Cruisemagstyle with your suggestions and I shall test them out – as the mosquitoes’ favourite food I am the perfect guinea pig.
