Glen Moroney, founder and CEO of Scenic, said: “Scenic Eclipse is a unique ship that requires an equally unique person to act in this role.

“We are delighted to welcome Dame Helen Mirren as Scenic Eclipse godmother – her style, beauty and spirit of adventure are true to those embodied in the design and ethos of Scenic Eclipse.

“Combined with the international acclaim as one of the world’s finest actresses, Helen Mirren makes the perfect godmother to figuratively preside over the ship and bring good fortune.”

Dame Helen Mirren will attend the christening of Scenic Eclipse, which takes part in New York on 10 September. This is after the luxury vessel undertakes its maiden voyage from Reykjavik, Iceland, on a 13-day discovery sailing, ending in Quebec on 27 August.

The actress added: “I am very honoured to have been chosen as the godmother to such a beautiful vessel as Scenic Eclipse. She will have many adventures and a wonderful life as she transports her guests in immaculate style and great safety to beautiful places.”

Dame Helen Mirren won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2007 for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen and has been nominated numerous other times.

Her role as godmother will see the actress play an important part within Scenic Eclipse’s christening ceremony and she will be responsible for the breaking of the Champagne bottle against the ship’s hull.

Described as the world’s first ‘discovery yacht’, Scenic Eclipse completed sea trials in June. It top features include 114 all-veranda suites, 10 dining options, a large spa with a well-equipped gym, two six-guest helicopters, one six-guest submarine, a state-of-the-art theatre, and indoor and outdoor plunge pools.

The ship’s technology also excels, with innovative zero-speed stabiliser fins, the highest passenger class ship ice class rating (Polar Class 6) and a GPS dynamic position system.
