A-list stars are lining up to name cruise ships – here are four of the most glamorous godmothers around…

Sophia Loren

Ship: MSC Preziosa, and the rest of the fleet

The Oscar-winning star and Hollywood legend, Sophia Loren, said at the launch of MSC Preziosa that “no one else is going to be an MSC godmother while I’m around.” She wasn’t kidding – she’s godmother to MSC’s entire fleet of cruise ships, and says that if she could go on any kind of holiday she would choose a cruise.

Sharon Stone

Ship: AmaVida

We were quite surprised (OK, very surprised) when we discovered the Basic Instinct actress was going to be naming Ama Waterways’ latest luxury vessel – but river cruising just got very glam indeed. Sharon Stone was chosen to be a godmother for her humanitarian efforts, and “her beauty and grace”.

Kristin Chenoweth

Ship: Quantum of the Seas

A huge star in the US, where she’s appeared in numerous stage shows and movies as well TV programmes including Glee, Kristin Chenoweth says she’s very excited to be godmother to Royal Caribbean’s new ship, which is expected to start sailing in October next year. “I’ve been lucky to play many roles and I am looking forward to this one,” she added. “I think the Royal Caribbean brand is the perfect match for me, especially with their history of providing exceptional entertainment experiences to their guests.”

Andie MacDowell

Ship: Queen Isabel

Andie MacDowell, the star of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Groundhog Day, was chosen to be a godmother for her “timeless beauty and elegance” and said she was “deeply honoured” to christen Uniworld’s river cruise ship.
