Sète, France

Another largely unspoilt small port, this time in the south of France east of Marseille, and within excursion distance of the magnificent citadel city of Carcassonne, complete with drawbridges, towers and cobbled streets. Elegant Montpellier is also just an excursion away, but if you don’t fancy a coach ride on a hot sunny day you could do worse than exploring delightful Sète. The town is an easy walk from the cruise terminal and has colourful old buildings as well as a collection of Art Deco architecture. There are plenty of open-air cafés and little boutique shops or you can even walk to the lighthouse or along the town’s many canals and beaches that are only five miles away.
Bolsover Cruise Club has a seven-night Europe cruise on Azamara Journey on 14 May from Barcelona to Nice calling at Sète and other ports including Roses in Spain for Figueres, Calvi on Corsica, and Portovenere in Italy, from £2,222pp, based on two people sharing, including flights. Visit or
