The Med is the number-one choice for cruise travellers in 2022, along with a preference for smaller and more environmentally friendly ships, research finds
Nearly half of them have the Mediterranean in their sights and nearly a quarter are keen on a European river cruise, with the British Isles, Baltic and Caribbean rounding out the top five destinations.
Travelling on smaller and more sustainable ships also emerged as key priorities, with 46% planning to sail on a smaller ship this year compared with cruises pre-pandemic, and 41% saying they took hybrid or low-carbon propulsion technology into account when choosing their itinerary.
Covid-19 policies were important to the vast majority of respondents (92%), though nearly half thought the risk from Covid-19 was lower on a cruise ship than an aeroplane (compared with 18% who disagreed), and just over a third said they felt ships were safer than hotels (compared with 25%).
Cruise forecast for 2022
Mundy Cruising managing director Edwina Lonsdale said: “Our latest survey shows that travellers are unperturbed by the recent media frenzy around the Omicron variant, and their plans and priorities for 2022 reflect a growing sense that we are over the worst of the pandemic.
“While Covid policies on board and vaccination rates in destination countries are of course still front of mind, cruisers are also looking to the future, with more emphasis placed on sustainable travel and excitement around the next generation of luxury ships.
“We are confident that the burning desire of travellers to get back to normal, along with the news that the UK government has overhauled its onerous and unnecessary testing regime for overseas travel, mean that cruise will come roaring back in 2022.”
The new ship launches highlighted by the panel include Silversea’s Silver Dawn and Seabourn’s first expedition ship Seabourn Venture, both setting sail in spring, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur which is due to launch next year.
The survey was carried out in December 2021 and had 109 respondents taken from the company’s Cruise Expert Panel, which is made up of 250 Mundy Cruising clients.
