New cruise ship Norwegian Getaway was floated out of its building dock on Saturday 2 November in Papenburg, Germany, in preparation for its launch in January 2014.

Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer, said:

“Hats off once again to the team at Meyer Werft for building an absolutely spectacular vessel in record time.

“We are now in the home stretch and looking forward to the launch of Miami’s ultimate ship.”

The 4,000-passenger ship has taken just 12 months to build and includes a choice of 27 dining options, including celebrity chef and Food Network star Geoffrey Zakarian’s three dining concepts: Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian; Ocean Blue on The Waterfront and The Raw Bar.

The Waterfront quarter-mile promenade offers plenty of dining and shopping opportunities and 678 Ocean Place has three interconnecting decks of daytime and evening entertainment.

Shows on board will include performances of the seven-time Tony Award nominated musical Legally Blonde and Broadway dance production Burn the Floor plus the first GRAMMY experience at sea with live performances from past winners and nominees.

Bernard Meyer, Managing Partner of Meyer Werft, said:

“This new vessel, built in merely 12 months, is one of the largest and most technologically advanced ships in the world.

“We are thrilled to see her leaving the building dock and getting ready for her sea trials.”

The artwork on the hull of the ship, a signature of Norwegian Cruise Line’s ships, is designed by Miami artist David “LEBO” Le Batars, featuring a mermaid holding the sun above the waves.

Norwegian Getaway, sister ship to Norwegian Breakaway, will feature The Illusionarium – a new dining and entertainment experience with world-class magicians and special effects.

The kids can get a chance to meet Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star, Dora the Explorer and Diego, among other favourites and there is a three-story Sports Complex with five slides and an elevated ropes course.

Every cruise will feature fireworks at sea set to music as part of the ship’s outdoor club Spice H20.

Following inaugural events in Europe, New York and Miami, Norwegian Getaway will sail nine-night Eastern Caribbean cruises departing weekly from Miami from 8 February 2014.
