Wine expert, Oz Clarke is sharing his knowledge on immersive wine cruises with Celebrity Cruises this summer so we caught up with him for our quick fire quiz
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?
The very tip of Africa on Arniston Bay. Theres just one little hotel in the fishing village called Arniston House and its utterly unsexy and unglamourous. It’s an old fashioned family hotel absolutely at the bottom of Africa. I’ve been down there before, and it’s best to book yourself a flight down there at the end of a hard winter.
What is your favourite city?
La Rochelle is a lovely city. If you’re interested in food and wine, La Rochelle is an absolutely fantastic place and of course you’re only a couple of hours drive away from Bordeaux. When I’m down there, I like to take a bunch of people off to visit some of the vineyards in Bordeaux.
What is your favourite country?
Some people choose Italy but I choose France. I suppose it is how you are brought up. My dad used to take us to the cliffs of Dover as kids and we would stand on the top of the cliffs in summer and point to the tops of the cliffs in Calais. It seemed so close that you could almost touch them. My dad would say that’s where it all starts – the warm south where everything is exotic and exciting. We never had a money then to go at first but then one day we all piled in the car and drove down. When we drove out of the ship on to the Calais dockyard, it was absolutely thrilling.
Is there anywhere you’re craving to visit?
Last winter I went to the Arctic as ever since I was a kid I’ve wanted to know what it was like. So next, I want to go to the Antarctic. I’ve found a Russian-crewed ship that goes right down into the Antarctic Circle.
Where are you off to our your next holiday?
In a couple of weeks time I’m off to San Francisco and then I’m going up to Seattle and inland to the desert area where there are some great, great vineyards.
