Princess Ocean Medallion review
By Marcus Adams | 22 Oct 2019
Marcus Adams tries out the award-winning Ocean Medallion from Princess Cruises and is seriously impressed.
We’re on board Crown Princess sailing around the British Isles and I’ve just ordered my favourite cocktail (a daiquiri) at the touch of a button. It may be the size of a 10-pence piece but the Ocean Medallion, which replaces the onboard cruise card, is definitely enhancing my cruise experience.
Creating a seamless time for guests is the Holy Grail for cruising. The Ocean Medallion promises to do just that and more. Sailing on board Princess Cruises’ Crown Princess from Southampton to Liverpool, I recently had the opportunity to try it out and, spoiler alert, it really didn’t disappoint.
Even before my trip had started, I could access the technology via the app. Through a simple interface, it only took me five minutes to check in, and when I arrived at the ship I was on board within 10 minutes.
As a keen Instagrammer keeping connected is very important to me when I’m travelling – but of course it’s also a way of staying in touch with family and friends. MedallionNet, Princess Cruises’ super-fast internet solution, allows you to do just that.
I was very impressed with the connectivity on board. Whether it was video-chatting, catching up on social media or streaming my favourite TV shows, the wifi performed better than I’ve experienced on any other ship.
No more scrabbling around looking for your room key when you return to your stateroom after a day exploring on shore, either – the ship senses your approach and unlocks the door for you. Honestly, it’s such a simple thing, but by far my favourite function.
Perhaps the smartest feature of Ocean Medallion is that it tells crew members where you are in real time. One day I really fancied some food and a drink from the tasty Salty Dog Grill, but I was enjoying sailing into Dublin in the sun and taking photos. No problem, I just opened the Ocean Medallion app, ordered what I wanted and within just a few minutes a crew member had found me and delivered my lunch (which was delicious).
In addition to the app, there are large interactive screens placed across the ship both in public areas as well as in all suites and cabins. These help you to personalise your own cruise.
My verdict? Ocean Medallion is elevating all aspects of the cruise experience by embracing technology in a seamless way that’s genuinely accessible to all, making a Princess cruise even more of a pleasure.
