Our regular column from Andy Harmer, VP Operations & Director of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) UK & Ireland
At the start of each year it is customary to reflect on another record-breaking 12 months in the number of Brits taking a cruise; indeed in 2017, 24 million people from around the world are expected to take a cruise holiday. Much of this is because the cruise industry continues to invest in increasingly eco-friendly ships, new onboard features and new destinations all the time, firmly placing the customer at the centre of everything that the cruise lines do.
One of the results of all of that development and investment is a huge increase in the choices now available to holidaymakers. From small ships to those carrying up to 6,000 passengers; from Alaska to Australasia; from James Martin to Jamie Oliver – cruising really does offer something for everyone.
And this has made a cruise holiday appealing to a growing number of holidaymakers – many of whom will be thinking about a cruise for the first time. They are likely to be attracted by the destinations that are visited, by the wide choice of experiences available on board and on shore, and also the incredible service that is offered on every cruise.
So if you’re planning to book a cruise, the upcoming wave period will see cruise lines offering their best deals for cruises throughout the year. This can include free cabin upgrades, onboard spend and great savings. The period runs through to March, so it’s a great time to plan your holiday and bag a deal in the process.
Cruises offer something for everyone, whether you want to enjoy luxury dining, pamper yourself with spa treatments or enjoy exciting onboard entertainment. Deciding which cruise ship is for you can depend on who you are travelling with. Families are offered onboard activities such as zip lining and designated children’s dining as well as dedicated teen areas. Adults are also well catered for.
Cruising allows you to visit multiple destinations in one holiday, whether that’s the Med or Baltic during the summer or a Caribbean cruise to get some winter sun. And remember that how we enjoy our time in these destinations varies by cruise lines too – think longer stays in ports, overnights, expedition cruising, culinary tours, and so on.
A cruise is an incredible way to see the world – the joy is finding your favourite.
