6. Cruise to Tahiti
Aranui III is a cargo and passenger ship plying the South Seas from Tahiti. Each two-week round trip calls at a number of islands delivering supplies. Despite its industrial looks and looming cranes it carries 200 passengers in comfort, with restaurant, two bars, sundeck and pool, with a Polynesian crew, lecturers on local culture and guides for tours of jungles and other sights. Stops include Hiva Oa, where Paul Gauguin worked, lived, shopped (the colonial store) and died (his grave is in the hilltop cemetery, near that of Belgian singer and composer Jacques Brel).
A 14-night trip, departing 17 times in 2014, has prices starting from £3,295pp, full board including tours, taxes and wine with dinner, but not including flights (01285 880980; steppestravel.co.uk).
