9. Cape Town to St Helena

Well, RMS Helena is actually second from last to be a Royal Mail Ship. Sailing between Cape Town and St Helena, a British Overseas territory in the South Atlantic (some trips continuing on to Ascension Island) with mail and supplies, this is part cruise, part adventure. There is space for 155 passengers in rooms with windows as well as providing budget interior dorm-style cabins for four with shared facilities.

There’s a swimming pool and life is resolutely traditional with games, deck cricket and beef tea served in the sun lounge, followed by six-course dinners.

A 15-day return trip, departing on 7 May 2014, from Cape Town to St Helena (10-day cruise, with an additional four-night stay on St Helena) costs from £850pp full board, sharing a four-berth interior cabin, not en-suite, cruise only (0207 575 6480; rms-st-helena.com).
