Viking has unveiled details of its first expedition ships to trusted agents and loyal customers.

A Viking spokesperson said: “Viking is in the process of launching new expedition cruises. For now, we are rolling out Viking Expeditions to your loyal past guests – and their travel agents – for an exclusive preview of these new voyages.”

Due to launch in 2022, the two ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, will each accommodate 378 guests and have six decks.

Among the ships’ 260-strong crew will be an expedition leader, ice navigator, biologist, glaciologist and naturalist. There will also be a polar code expert ensuring adherence to strict regulations.

Viking Octanis and Viking Polaris will initially sail the Arctic and Antarctica. Itineraries in the Antarctic will include a pre-cruise stay in Buenos Aires before boarding in Ushuaia, Argentina.

Arctic sailings will be roundtrip itineraries from Tromsø to Svalbard, Norway.

Octanis will begin sailing 13-day itineraries from 12 January 2022, while Polaris will start 13-day sailings from 16 August 2022.

General sales for the new ships Arctic and Antarctic itineraries will open in early 2020.

Measuring 672ft in length, both ships will have Polar Class 6 hulls. This will allow them to operate in the summer and autumn in polar regions.

Also revealed is that there will be a Manfredi’s Italian restaurant, spa, library and six cabin categories on board.

“We will unveil all details about our new expeditions product when it is publicly announced on 15 January 2020,” add the Viking spokesperson.
