Viking to operate river cruises on the Mississippi
By Liz Jarvis | 25 Feb 2015
After months of speculation, Viking Cruises have confirmed they will operate river cruises on the Mississippi from late 2017.
The company will take passengers on a journey along the Mississippi River from New Orleans to itinerary stops in St. James, East Baton Rouge and West Feliciana parishes; continuing upriver to Memphis, Tennessee; St. Louis; or St. Paul, Minnesota, depending on the season. More details on itineraries, ship design and an official launch date will be confirmed later in the year.
Wendy Atkin-Smith, UK MD of Viking Cruises said: “This move marks an exciting step for Viking Cruises and our guests who have been keen to see us continue opening up new adventures and experiences from them outside of our popular European and South Asian routes.”
It is understood that the Viking ships will retain the river cruise line’s signature Scandinavian contemporary chic style, while being sympathetic to the river and the ports of call.
